Rabbi David Lau, on Sinai War

29 October - 5 November 1956

(taken from the movie "From Genesis to Independence")

The surrounding nations did not like the existence of the Jews who had a Jewish heritage.

The Jews tried to be a guiding light to the Gentiles., but many did not like it in the past and still don't today.

After the Warof Independence, when it was possible to deal with immigration and help countrymen return to their forefathers' land, the fedayeen began causing problems. They infiltrated the country and harmed innocent women and children.

In this way, the Israeli Army went on retaliation missions, and tried to be intimidating.

In order to demonstrate that they too had means of showing the might of the sword.

But as in the times when the Second Temple was being built, the Jews were compelled to hold a sword in one hand while building the temple in Jerusalem.

Israel was compelled on the one hand to continue to absorb waves of immigrants and build the country, while on the other hand join France and England in order to alleviate the pressure put on Israel.

To alleviate the problems with the fedayeen, we partiiipated in the Sinai campaign, to show that even if we want peace, if we have no choice, we will show the might of the sword and succeed.
