Avigdor Kahalani, on War of Independence

November 1947 - March 1949

Independence was declared at Dizengoff House in Tel Aviv on Friday, the 14th of May, 1948, which was the last day of the British Mandate in the land of Israel.

The Jewish settlement knew that when the Mandate terminated, the Arab armies would   invade  the country in order to prevent the implementation of the United Nations

partition plan for Palestine.

In spite of the risk in this declaration, the leaders of the Jewish settlement decided to declare the establishment of the State of Israel.

The National Council of 37 members changed its name to the Temporary Council of the state, and became the legislative body.

The Temporary Council became the temporary government, and the chairman was David Ben-Gurion.

He read out the Declaration of Independence, which was the first constitutional document of Israel.

The Declaration of Independence outlined the conduct and character of the State as the state of the Jews, to gather in the Jews from the Diaspora, and relate to its citizens as equals, no matter what their religion, race or gender.

David Ben-Gurion became the first prime minister, and was the Minister of Defense in the temporary government.

Israel celebrates Independence Day every year on the 5th of Iyar.

On the same night, the United States recognized the new state.

Three days later, Russia also recognized the state as did other countries around the world.

The day after the Declaration of Independence, the Arab armies of five states invaded the country, and so began the War of Independence.
